SGF Welcomes Government Move on ‘Pasty Tax’
Following reports that the UK Government will now only apply VAT to food which is intended to be sold hot and not on food which is only hot because it is cooling down SGF Chief Executive, John Drummond, said:
“The vast majority of responsible retailers currently charge VAT on the hot food that they sell and we welcomed the government’s attempt to provide clarity to ensure that there is a fair and consistent application of tax across all retailers.
“However, we made clear in our submission to the government’s consultation that we did not support the use of ‘ambient air temperature’ as the mechanism with which to level the playing field.
“The new proposals are in line with what SGF advocated as an alternative approach and we welcome this common sense decision.”
