SGF Two-minute Survey: Access to Cash and Free to Use ATMs

Convenience stores across Scotland provide an essential local service for their communities. In many cases, free access to cash encourages footfall and is an important part of the offer available for customers. This is particularly true for many rural, remote, elderly and vulnerable communities.

Results so far show that:

  • Most stores still provide free access to cash, and just under half of customers still use cash.

  • That free access to cash is very or extremely valuable for customers.

  • Despite the perceived decline in free-to-use ATMs, being forced to move to a paid system would damage customer relations.

Recently, concerns were raised by SGF’s retail members regarding the future of free-to-use cash machines in Scotland. LINK (responsible for the UK network) has confirmed that this is not the case, with the number of free-to-use machines increasing from 2,761 in January 2021 to 2,845 in January 2023.

SFG is encouraging members to complete a short survey about their views on free and straight-forward access to cash, and its importance for stores across Scotland.
