Recorded Crime in Scotland, 2023-24

The Scottish Government has published statistics on recorded crime for 2023-2024. Some of the key statistics for our sector include:

  • Shop theft has increased by 41% since 2014-15.

  • 7% of threatening and abusive behaviour was made toward shopworkers.

  • There were 2,555 incidents of common assault of a retail worker - 4% of all Common assault

  • Around 24% of the sampled crimes against retail workers occurred in one of Scotland’s Top 15% most deprived areas

SGF chief executive Dr Pete Cheema OBE said: “The recorded crime in Scotland statistics for 2023/24 published by the Scottish Government are a real concern for our sector as they clearly show that shoplifting and crimes against retail workers such as assault, threatening and abusive behaviour are prevalent.

“We would urge the Scottish Government to act before things get even worse. If not now, then when?”
