Public Health Scotland Issues Statement on Improving Scotland's Health

Public Health Scotland and Scottish Directors of Public Health have issued a consensus statement addressing the need for action to improve the health of Scotland’s population through better diet and weight management. Key areas for action include:

  • The Scottish Government, working with the UK Government as necessary, should explore and fully implement fiscal measures (taxation) and legislation to drive improvements in the nutritional quality of food through reformulation and restrictions in the promotion/ marketing of products high in fat, sugar or salt.

  • Local Authorities, drawing on local planning, licensing and advertising powers, must take account of public health evidence and continue to increase access to outlets that offer healthy foods, reduce the prevalence of unhealthy food outlets and reduce exposure to advertising of products high fat, sugar or salt.

  • There needs to be adequate capacity for local regulatory and enforcement functions.

The report also suggests developing a clear plan to work with the food industry, including retailers, to improve the availability and affordability of healthy and sustainable food and beverage options. The full statement is available to view here.
