Further findings from the CMA’s review of unit pricing in the groceries sector

Following new pricing analysis and consumer research, Competition and Markets Authority have launched a drive encouraging people to use unit pricing to help their grocery budget go further. This includes a short guide for shoppers published on our website, alongside a social media campaign.

The short guide explains what unit pricing is and how it can help people identify the best-value grocery items instore and online, to save money on their shop. It also aims to dispel some of the assumptions that are made on pricing.

At the same time, we are providing more information on the scope of our loyalty pricing work. With the rise in some supermarkets making cheaper prices only available for loyalty card members, we previously announced that we would begin a review of loyalty pricing by supermarkets in January 2024. The review is part of our programme of work to help tackle cost of living pressures in the groceries sector. An update is planned for Summer 2024.
